Abstract

The Internet allows ethnographers to deposit the textual materials on which they base their writing in virtual archives. Electronically archived fieldwork documents can be accessed at any time by the writer, his or her readers, and the people studied. Johannes Fabian, a leading theorist of anthropological practice, argues that virtual archives have the potential to shift the emphasis in ethnographic writing from the monograph to commentary. In this insightful study, he returns to the recording of a conversation he had with a ritual healer in the Congolese town of Lubumbashi more than three decades ago. Fabian's transcript and translation of the exchange have been deposited on a website (Language and Popular Culture in Africa), and in Ethnography as Commentary he provides a model of writing in the presence of a virtual archive. In his commentary, Fabian reconstructs his meeting with the healer Kahenga Mukonkwa Michel, in which the two discussed the ritual that Kahenga performed to protect Fabian's home from burglary. Fabian reflects on the expectations and terminology that shape his description of Kahenga's ritual and meditates on how ethnographic texts are made, considering the settings, the participants, the technologies, and the linguistic medium that influence the transcription and translation of a recording and thus fashion ethnographic knowledge.

Abstract

What is it that really binds Dutch people together? That's the central question of many public debates. This study focuses on the the role of victimhood on our concept of society. Drawing on the works of the American philosopher Richard Rorty, the author discusses morality, criminality, religion, sexual abuse and legalisation of prostituiton.

Abstract

From the pageantry of Oprah Winfrey's daytime talk show to the Atlanta-based Coca-Cola empire, American "pop" culture-and the contemporary films, television programs, and cultural objects that determine it-dominates the rest of the world through its hegemonic presence. Does that make everyone a hybridized American or do these elements find mediation within the other cultures that consume them? Fabricating the Absolute Fake applies elements of postmodern theory-Jean Baudrillard's hyperreality and Umberto Eco's "absolute fake", among others-to this globally mediated American pop culture in order to examine both the phenomenon itself and its specific appropriation in the Netherlands, as evidenced by diverse cultural icons like the Elvis-inspired crooner Lee Towers, the Moroccan-Dutch white rapper Ali B, musical tributes to an assassinated politician, and the Dutch reality soap opera scene. A fascinating exploration of how global cultures struggle to create their own "America" within a post-September 11 media culture, Fabricating the Absolute Fake reflects on what it might mean to truly take part in American popular culture. "A brilliant, thoroughly enjoyable work of cultural critique. . . . Jaap Kooijman takes seemingly exhausted concepts like "Americanization" and turns them on their head."-Anne McCarthy, New York University

Abstract

Cuizine: The Journal of Canadian Food Cultures / Revue des cultures culinaires au Canada nourishes intellectual exchanges on the subject of food in Canada from multicultural perspectives. Cuizine aims to provide an innovative academic forum for interdisciplinary discussions surrounding the diverse culinary cultures of Canada, while also providing a venue for dynamic creative content on the subject. Cuizine encourages submissions that emphasize site-specific regional foodways across the country, whether it is an historical examination of first generation Sri Lankan immigrant cooking in Toronto, a socio-economic study on the role of seal in Nunavut food culture, or a literary analysis of Duddy Kravitz's smoked meat escapades. At the same time, Canada's ethnic groups and cultural practices are not understood in isolation or as static phenomena. Rather, they evolve constantly and, in a nation of immigrants, interplay off each other. Cuizine hopes to foster this cross-cultural exchange by demonstrating the centrality of foodways to Canadian cultural identity. Cuizine also serves as a creative outlet for food-themed written and visual pieces. Poetry and prose submissions should feed our minds, and aesthetic pieces should engage our senses.
